According to some Maori myths and legends the great Polynesian explorer and navigator Kupe sailed from Hawaiiki in his canoe called Matahouroa to Taipa beach he made the shark Tapu and called the harbour Mangonui meaning big shark in the Maori Lanquage.
How Mangonui got its name:
we are wondering how mangonui got its name so we decided to study it and this is what we found
That's really interesting Briannah, I didn't know where the name Mangonui came from. That was a very good choice of picture to go with your story. The old wharf doesn't look as though it's changed much.
ReplyDeleteI'm little puzzled though about the shark, did the shark try to attack the waka or do you think it helped guide Kupa into a safe harbour? I'd be really interested to know, have you thought about adding some more information to your post about the shark?
hello thanks
